You can have quick access to your computer’s sound volume using the sound volume icon on the Windows taskbar. You can mute your sound, change the volume level or even access the sound mixer if your audio device supports it.

In some cases the volume icon can be missing. Maybe someone changed the settings on your computer, but it is also possible that you installed some software that caused the volume icon to disappear from the taskbar. Video drivers that include sound options and have their own control panel software sometimes cause this, but any software that updates the settings for the notification area could cause the volume icon to disappear.

Since this is a simple Windows setting, it is easy to bring back the volume icon on the taskbar.

  1. Open the Windows Control Panel from the Start menu.
  2. Go to Sounds and Audio Devices.
  3. In the Volume tab, select the checkbox named “Place volume icon on the tasbar” and click OK.

Missing volume icon

In Vista you can also restore the volume icon through the Start menu button.

  1. Right-click the Start menu button and select Properties.
  2. Next, select the tab called Notification Area.
  3. Now make sure the checkbox labeled Volume is selected and click OK.

Volume icon in taskbar missing

This should bring back the volume icon on your taskbar. Although the volume icon is shown in the notification area of the taskbar, it is never hidden, so the hide inactive devices will not affect the sound volume icon.
